fundraiser makes gift to support Gammage

Peter Means

The passion for his job is evident when talking to Peter Means. As director of development for ASU Gammage, Peter is responsible for raising funds to support the self-sustaining performing arts center.

Starting his professional career as a ballet dancer enabled him to see firsthand how the arts can touch lives. After receiving his master’s degree in business administration, he spent a number of years at the Connecticut Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA), which manages the historic Schubert Theater.

“I have always believed in financially supporting the institutions where I’ve worked,” said Means, “usually with gifts of cash. I think it makes me a better fundraiser.”

Coming to ASU Gammage three years ago, Means planned to continue this support. But with his wife in graduate school and young twins at home, he was unsure of his ability to make an immediate commitment. After he attended an estate and gift planning seminar conducted by a colleague, Peter chose to make a future gift through his retirement plan.

“Making a gift of a portion of my retirement plan allowed me to make a commitment today hoping that in the future it would grow into a significant sum. My wife, Elizabeth, and I agreed it was the perfect gift at this time in our lives.

“ASU Gammage is a living, breathing institution that people can come to and enjoy. My hope for the future is that my gift will help ensure that Gammage is preserved not only because of its architectural significance but also because it is one of the best university-based performing arts centers in the country.”
