Mary Lou Fulton College of Education

ASU at the Tempe campus

The Mary Lou Fulton College of Education was at the core of the beginnings of the Arizona Territorial Normal School back in 1885. The school helped aspiring teachers earn the first higher-education degrees awarded in the Southwest at what was to eventually become Arizona State University.

Today, ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton College of Education graduates nearly 600 pre-service teachers annually, preparing practitioners for work in school settings from pre-K through higher education, and researchers to produce work designed to influence learning and professional practice.

The Fulton College of Education also plays an essential role as a member of the ASU, pre K-16 and related private and public sector agents that form a broad-based educational community. Collectively, the college acts to transform the education of today into the education needed tomorrow in guiding all learners to high standards of learning and development in the complex social settings of Arizona, the Southwest and the nation.

The college boasts many accomplishments, particularly national recognition of its efforts by U.S. News & World Report in its “America’s Best Graduate Schools 2006 Rankings” where the college ranked 26th among public graduate colleges of education in overall rankings and tied for 35th among all public and private graduate programs. The report ranked the college 16th among public graduate colleges of education in peer reputation — an assessment by deans and faculty — and tied it at 22nd for private and public institutions.

The ASU Mary Lou Fulton College of Education offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in programs of study in three academic divisions: Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, and Psychology in Education. A post-baccalaureate certificate for college graduates seeking their initial teacher certification is also offered through the Division of Curriculum and Instruction.
