Decision Theater

ASU at the Tempe campus

The Decision Theater at Arizona State University is a world-class facility for optimizing interactive decision-making through an innovative blend of computational science, advanced modeling and state-of-the-art, 3-D visual technologies. Covering 8,000 square feet in downtown Tempe, the Decision Theater offers an immersive, interactive 3-D environment to connect science with practice. A core component is a 260-degree, multi-faceted screen with seven rear-projection passive stereo sources that can display panoramic computer graphics and 3-D video content.

The primary mission of the Decision Theater is to serve as a home for public and private policymakers to participate in collaborative decision making by allowing people with diverse backgrounds to more easily visualize the future through the exploration of alternative scenarios. A secondary mission is to operate as a laboratory for research to advance the state-of-the-art in visualization, computer sciences, cognitive sciences and policy sciences.

The Decision Theater team is made up of experienced research and technology experts dedicated to helping academic, business, government and community leaders to visualize, understand and make decisions regarding very complex problems. Several local and national corporations and research organizations — including the Salt River Project, the National Science Foundation and the Arizona Department of Water Resources — have partnered with the Decision Theater. The immersive visualization and collaborative decision making afforded by the Decision Theater is helping them to create optimal solutions to some of the most challenging issues facing local, regional and global communities.
