ASU and the ASU Foundation for A New American University have joined together in a strategic partnership with donors to generate new scholarship endowments that will ensure academically talented students with limited financial resources have access to higher education.
In 2006, Arizona State University promised that no deserving, qualified student would be denied the opportunity to earn a degree because of his or her family's inability to pay.
Despite having one of the lowest tuition rates of our peer institutions, affording ASU is an issue for many of our students. The number of undergraduate students eligible for federal Pell grants, an indication of student need, has increased dramatically — 181 percent since 2001.
Although financial aid for students is increasing, the largest growth in support has been in the form of student loans, leaving many students heavily indebted upon graduation and before entering the workforce.
Many people believe federal and state funding provide most financial aid to students. In fact, ASU funded $203 million in institutional awards for need- and merit-based scholarships in 2011–12 — more than federal and state scholarships and grants combined. An additional $50 million was awarded through the university from endowed scholarships and other private and external funds.
