The Global Institute of Sustainability is the hub of Arizona State University’s sustainability initiatives. ASU’s framework for addressing the challenges of sustainability builds upon four cornerstones: research, education, business practices and global partnerships. These efforts span disciplines, campuses and institutional boundaries to create responsible solutions for an urbanizing world.
The Institute is charged with catalyzing and advancing interdisciplinary research regarding environmental, economic and social sustainability. To do this, we bring together life scientists, social scientists, engineers, humanists, and government and industry leaders to share knowledge and develop solutions to real-world problems.
The School of Sustainability (within the Global Institute of Sustainability) offers master’s and bachelor’s degrees in sustainability. The Institute provides hands-on research training and brings sustainability education into local K-12 classrooms. Students across the university can study and earn minors and concentrations in sustainability.
ASU recognizes that advancing sustainability begins internally with its own business practices and policies. The university has made an institutional commitment to lead by example through the sustainable operation of all units at all four campuses. The Global Institute of Sustainability provides leadership and coordination for university sustainability initiatives.
The Institute focuses on research that is useful to the greater community of Phoenix, around the world and everywhere in between. The Institute also connects researchers with practitioners from business, industry, municipalities and government to collaborate on planning for sustainability challenges of urban growth, environmental protection, resource management, and social and economic development.
