Your generosity inspires creativity in youth and helps improve their writing skills and build bridges to college and careers.

Young Authors' Studio (YAS) is ASU’s free writing program for youth ages 10-18. When you give to the Young Authors’ Studio, you help cultivate young peoples’ writing skills and confidence, inspire creativity and imagination, offer experiences with many different forms of writing, and honor talents and interests that sometimes go unnoticed in schools.

With a team of ASU students, Professor Wendy Williams launched YAS in 2017. The program moved online in 2020, expanding in order to serve students and teachers across the state and beyond. In the current online program, youth writers can attend writing workshops, explore activities on the website, earn a certificate for assembling a writing portfolio, and submit original stories, poems, songs, comics and animated films for publication in the online journal, Unscripted.

YAS is run by a small team of ASU undergraduate and graduate students each spring. These writing mentors earn college credit for their work designing curriculum, leading workshops, promoting the program and publishing the online journal, Unscripted. The mentors gain valuable real-world skills and experiences through this internship.

Encouraged by the success of the online program, we plan to expand YAS in the coming years. Your donations will help fund curriculum development, workshops and events, program promotion and basic supplies. This program can do a lot with a $10 donation, and large gifts will make it possible to bring professional authors into the free workshops, which would be an amazing opportunity for the youth writers.
