Recognizing that an informed and educated public is essential to the success of our democracy, the Sarah and David Bodney First Amendment Scholarship is intended to facilitate the academic achievement of a student in the Cronkite School whose work demonstrates a commitment to responsible, vigorous reporting on matters of public concern, especially the accountability of the powerful and the rights of the vulnerable.

I am so honored and grateful to be a recipient of the Sarah and David Bodney First Amendment Scholarship. Because of this scholarship my journey at ASU became much easier without as big a financial burden. I am so grateful to be able to spend more time focusing on my studies, rather than working to pay my tuition."

Impact of donor support

  • The Cronkite School’s “teaching hospital” model of education offers students real-world, hands-on training in a live environment.
  • More than 125 students benefited from donor-funded scholarship support during the 2022-2023 academic year.
  • Cronkite students have access to 13 full-immersion professional programs that produce news, information and community engagement on critical issues for the state, region and nation.
  • In the 2021-2022 academic year, more than 400 students were placed into internships.
  • 92% of Cronkite alumni are employed full time.

The need for journalists who are committed to responsible, vigorous reporting on matters of public concern has never been greater. The Cronkite School prepares students for the challenge of gathering and reporting news that holds the powerful to account and protects the vulnerable from abuse. To facilitate the education of journalism students with their eyes on these issues, we established this First Amendment Scholarship, and we encourage others to contribute or find other ways to support Cronkite School students.
