Cal Seciwa worked at ASU for more than 15 years. He founded the American Indian Institute (now the American Indian Student Support Services) and served as its director from 1989 to 2006. During his tenure, Seciwa worked tirelesssly to recruit, retain and ensure the success of Native students.

Seciwa was raised in the Zuni area of New Mexico, where he helped his family farm and ranch. Throughout his life, he maintained close ties with his Zuni heritage. He worked as a teacher, school administrator, tribal administrator and coordinator of intertribal efforts before beginning arriving at ASU. He then went to work at Northern Arizona University, where he served as director of the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals. Seciwa passed away in 2009 surrounded by his family. This scholarship honors his life and memory.
