Coach Joe McDonald Sun Devil Football Scholarship

Coach Joe McDonald Sun Devil Football Scholarship

Learn more about your impact

This scholarship is named in honor of the late Joe McDonald, whose storied career as a player, coach and administrator at ASU spanned two decades. During his tenure, McDonald was known for championing those around him. J. D. Hill, who excelled under McDonald’s guidance and went on to the NFL, remembered his coach fondly: “He wanted us to succeed, and he wanted to always give our best on and off the field.” This fund continues McDonald’s legacy by directly supporting student-athlete football players who might otherwise struggle with the costs of attending ASU. Your gift lowers these barriers to entry and allows student-athletes to focus on achieving success and giving their best both on and off the field.

Impact of Donor Support

  • The cost for an out-of-state student-athlete to attend ASU for one year is $71,660 on average between tuition, team travel, equipment, sports medicine, food and nutrition and tutoring/academic resources.
  • Arizona State ranked No. 1 in the Pac-12 Conference for the second year in a row in 2023 for Academic Progress Rating which tracks achievement in the classroom year over year ahead of Stanford, Cal, USC and UCLA.
  • Some more metrics that show just how much these hard-working student-athletes have achieved with your support: 3.3 average GPA (fall 2022), 76% of student-athletes received “Scholar Baller” status (3.0 GPA or higher), 110 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA and 138 Academic All-Americans since 2000, which ranks second in the Pac-12 during that stretch.

Our family believes in giving back and sharing the blessings we have received financially and through our time."
