Professor Connie Borror had a profound impact on students and faculty at the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Science at Arizona State University’s West Valley campus. She was an extraordinary statistician and a true luminary in her field.
Borror was the second faculty member hired by the new Department of Mathematical Sciences and Applied Computing at ASU’s West Valley campus. Her innovative teaching and commitment to the programs of the Department continue to have an impact. In addition, Borror was a staunch and vocal advocate for the New College faculty and the biggest supporter and mentor to our students.
She developed the Bachelor in Science in Statistics degree program, which was the first bachelor’s degree in statistics in the state of Arizona. Borror left her imprint firmly on this degree. Last but not least, she was a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the first woman to receive the prestigious Shewhart Medal in statistics.
This scholarship is a vital vehicle to honor Borror’s legacy and impact and continue supporting many students pursuing a statistics degree and professions in related fields.
Connie exemplified what it meant to be an advisor in a graduate program — always there to answer research questions, supportive, and a great friend and mentor. I’ve donated to this scholarship since I graduated in 2016 not just to honor her memory, but to lead by her example and help the next generation of students."
