Ronnie Lopez Spirit of Service Scholarship

Ronnie Lopez was born in the mining town of Miami, Arizona, and became a top powerbroker in Democratic politics in Phoenix. He served as a field representative for the Arizona State Civil Rights Commission and investigated allegations of discrimination. Over the next eight years, he led Chicanos Por La Causa and then served as a justice of the peace in west Phoenix. He built a reputation as a passionate champion of better housing and education for the Hispanic community.
Lopez was posthumously presented the first-ever edition of The Congressman Ed Pastor Public Servant Leader Award presented by ASU's Congressman Ed Pastor Center for Politics and Public Service. Lopez and Pastor were close friends who grew up in the same hometown and Lopez served as an indispensable advisor and constant champion of the congressman. The Ronnie Lopez Scholarship will support students with an affinity for public service through political engagement.
Impact of donor support
- More learners can pursue higher education. Thanks to our donors, more than 7,000 ASU students have received upwards of $32 million in scholarships with more than $39 million raised.
- More students succeed. ASU ranks #1 among the state’s public universities for its 86% first-year retention rate thanks in part to donor-funded student success initiatives.
- Important initiatives continue. More than $320 million in new gifts and commitments support ongoing initiatives at ASU.
- The spirit of generosity abounds. In the past year, more than 100,000 individual, corporate and foundation donors stepped forward to help the ASU community.
