Dr. Raymond V. Padilla was a founder of the ASU Hispanic Research Center and its first permanent Director. He established what is now the School of Transborder Studies and was the first recipient of the Legacy Award presented by the ASU Chicano/Latino Faculty and Staff Association. He was an activist, academic, and mentor to PhD students in higher education, and his research focused on the benefits of bilingual education, access to higher education, and student success modeling. Dr. Padilla's life is an example of overcoming great adversity and poverty through education. He believed that advancement within communities is achieved by becoming university-educated, in ever-increasing numbers, one student at a time.
