Designed to flow with the desert landscape of the Polytechnic campus, the Garden Commons at Arizona State University, a 5500+ sq. ft. space housing dozens of fruit trees and raised beds for vegetables and flowers, provides students, faculty and community members with opportunities to engage directly with ecological stewardship, food systems and environmental resilience. The purpose of the Garden Commons is to serve as a dynamic, hands-on learning environment that supports interdisciplinary education through sustainable and organic gardening practices.
As of 2019, the Garden Commons has experienced growing engagement, with over 2100 volunteer hours logged and over 200 events. Join the movement to foster community connection, enhance academic learning and cultivate practical skills that empower participants to contribute to a more resilient and environmentally conscious future.
One of the highlights of my time at ASU so far has been the Garden Commons and its Garden Ambassador program. It has taught me practical, efficient techniques for urban gardening and sustainable practices, and it has allowed me to build a sense of community with people who share my passions. Through this community, I have had the opportunity to meet people who share my passion, many of whom started as colleagues and are now some of my close friends."
