The Southwest Environmental Information Network helps researchers and the general public better understand the natural world by bringing together the collections and resources of nearly 400 herbariums. While originally focused on the Southwest, the network now includes departments, museums and agencies beyond it, linking over 24 million records. Network users find species lists, interactive keys, images that aid in plant identification and interactive plant distribution maps that help people better understand flora in their area.

Herbaria are important sources of environmental information, but in the past have been used only by relatively small groups of scientists and students. Your support helps make the resources of nearly 400 herbaria easily accessible to the public and researchers alike.

The Herbarium is an irreplaceable resource for scientists and citizens. It contains a wealth of biological, environmental and historical information, and the proper curation of this information costs money. In our world of ever-changing environmental and climatic conditions, it is very important to protect herbaria for future generations — to provide material for botanists to make identifications, to monitor environmental change and for future reference.”
